WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A magnitude 6.1 aftershock shook central Chile on Wednesday, four days after a massive 8.8 earthquake killed more than 800 people, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
It said the quake, shallow at a depth of 21.4 miles (34 km), was centered in the ocean, just 24 miles (39 km) west of Valparaiso, and struck at 10:59 p.m. (0159 GMT on Thursday).

Strong earthquake hits Taiwan; injuries reported

TAIPEI, Taiwan — A powerful 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Taiwan on Thursday, causing widespread damage and disrupting communications around the island. Local news reports said several people were injured.
The quake was centered in the county of Kaohsiung, and struck at a depth of about 3.1 miles (5 kilometers). Kaohsiung is about 249 miles (400 kilometers) south of the capital Taipei.
No tsunami alert was issued.
