Moderate earthquake jolts S Japan

TOKYO, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) — An earthquake measuring a preliminary magnitude of 4.8 jolted Tokunoshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture and neighboring islands in southern Japan on Thursday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. There were no immediate reports of injuries from the 4:11 p.m. quake. No tsunami warning was issued. The focus of the quake was some 40 kilometers under the surface of the sea off Amami-Oshima Island.
