Earthquake Strikes Southern Japanese Okinawa Islands, USGS Says

Feb. 7 (Bloomberg) — An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 was reported struck the Japan’s southwestern Ryukyu Islands, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake was centered 16 kilometers (10 miles) deep about 114 kilometers south- southwest of Ishigaki Island, some 220 kilometers east of Taiwan, the report said. No destructive tsunami was expected from the tremor, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Taiwan hit by 6.3-magnitude earthquake

No damage or injuries after tremor off east coast

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A magnitude-6.3 earthquake struck off the east coast Sunday, but no damage or injuries were immediately reported.

The tremor struck under the ocean, 165.7 kilometers southeast of the Hualien City earthquake observation center, at 2:10 p.m., the Central Weather Bureau said. The epicenter was located at a depth of 15.5 kilometers.

The shock was felt all over Taiwan, including in Taipei where tall buildings swayed. The quake registered an intensity of three along the east coast, in parts of the counties of Hualien, Taitung and Ilan, the bureau said.
